Allergic Rhinitis or Nasal Allergy

It is a result of an immune system that is overly sensitive to certain grass & tree pollens. Pollen is the most common outdoor allergen. Pollen is lightweight and can easily become airborne. Pollen is also often transported unknowingly by insects and animals. Mostly, it’s the male plants of the species that produce the allergy-causing pollen. There are three main groups of pollen; tree pollen, grass pollen and weed pollen.

Tips for handling Allergic Rhinitis

While it is impossible to escape pollen and dust completely (as much as you’d like to) there are some things that you can do to help reduce your exposure.

Avoid spending time in rural areas

Sea breezes can blow dust and pollen in land; heading to the coast can help you to escape the pesky plants!

Wash when you get home

Pollen and dust can stick to your skin and hair. On most days, showering and washing your hair after arriving home and changing your clothing can help to reduce symptoms.

Keep windows and doors closed

This is most important during the morning and evening when dust and pollen levels peak. Shutting windows and doors can help to keep the dust and pollen outside of your home.

Dress for the weather

Wear wraparound sunglasses and a hat with a large brim, this can help to keep pollen out of your eyes and off your face.

Allergens cause allergies, and unfortunately, allergens are everywhere. Common allergens include pollen, dust mites, mold, seafood, and pet dander. While there’s no way to completely eliminate allergens, knowing which ones affect you will help you reduce them.
